If you’ve been shopping for resin rhinestones, you’ve probably noticed there’s more than one type. It can get confusing! So let’s break down the three main types of resin rhinestones and what makes each one special.
Foil Back Resin Rhinestones
Foil back resin stones have a reflective foil layer on the back, which is what gives them their sparkle. These look the most similar to glass rhinestones - super shiny and eye-catching.
If you love that classic crystal sparkle but want the lighter weight and lower price of resin, foil backs are a great choice.
One thing to know: some glues like E6000 and B7000 can actually eat away at the foil backing over time. We don’t carry or recommend those glues anyway since they’re toxic and require protective equipment to use safely. Stick with a quality craft glue like Liquid Fusion, Gem Tac or Fusion Tack and you’ll be fine!
Transparent (No Foil) Resin Rhinestones
These stones have no foil backing, which means they’re completely see-through. Why would you want that? Because it opens up some really fun creative options!
When you place a transparent stone over a colored surface, the color shows through. Put a yellow transparent stone over a blue surface and it turns green. Layer them over glitter or metallic vinyl for cool effects. They’re perfect for crafters who like to experiment.
Jelly Resin Rhinestones
Jelly rhinestones are opaque - you can’t see through them at all. They have a smooth, candy-like finish that’s really pretty in person.
We carry jelly stones in solid colors, AB finishes (that rainbow flash), and macaroon colors - which are soft, unique pastels that you won’t find everywhere.
Because they’re opaque, jelly stones aren’t as sparkly as foil back or glass. But they have their own vibe - more playful and modern. They’re perfect for projects where you want bold color without a lot of flash.
So Which Type Should You Choose?
Honestly? There’s no wrong answer. They all cost about the same, they all apply the same way, and none of them are harder to work with than the others.
It really comes down to the look you want:
Want maximum sparkle? Go with foil back.
Want to play with color layering and effects? Try transparent.
Want bold, solid color with a candy-like finish? Jelly is your jam.
Or grab a little of each and experiment - that’s half the fun!
